To swap USDT, connect a wallet on the network where your Tether is, pick USDT as “from” and choose what you want: another token (ETH, BTC, TRX, SOL, USDC) or USDT on a different network. On our October 30, 2026 check, moving $1,000 of USDT between networks cost about $2.50-6 in route fees, and the network you start on decided most of the rest.
Key Takeaways
- Two kinds of USDT swap: USDT to another token, or USDT to USDT on another network (TRC20 to BEP20, ERC20 to Solana and so on).
- The start network matters most: BNB Chain and Polygon gas was about $0.01; Ethereum about $0.10-0.50; Tron about $22 without staked energy.
- Time: from about 1 second (Ethereum to Solana) to under 2 minutes (Ethereum to Tron).
- Main trap: USDT on each network is a different token. Send it only to an address on the network you selected.
What Is USDT?
USDT (Tether) is a dollar stablecoin issued by Tether: 1 USDT is designed to equal 1 US dollar. The same name exists on many networks, each as a separate token contract: TRC20 on Tron, ERC20 on Ethereum, BEP20 on BNB Chain, SPL on Solana and others. See USDT networks compared and USDT0 for the newer cross-chain version.
Two Ways to Swap USDT
1. USDT to another token. You sell USDT for a coin on the same network (USDT to TRX on Tron, USDT to BNB on BNB Chain) or on a different one (USDT on Tron to ETH on Arbitrum). Same-network swaps go through DEX pools; cross-network swaps add a bridge or an intent solver. Pick the pair:
| You want | Guide |
|---|---|
| BTC | Swap USDT to BTC |
| ETH | Swap USDT to ETH |
| TRX | Swap USDT to TRX |
| BNB | Swap USDT to BNB |
| SOL | Swap USDT to SOL |
| USDC | USDC to USDT and back |
And the other way: BTC to USDT, ETH to USDT, TRX to USDT, BNB to USDT, SOL to USDT, POL to USDT, AVAX to USDT.
2. USDT to USDT on another network. Your balance stays in dollars; only the network changes. This is what people mean by “TRC20 to BEP20” or “ERC20 to TRC20”. Exchanges often charge a fixed withdrawal fee for this; an on-chain route charges route fees plus the gas of your start network. More on this in how to bridge USDT and the cheapest way to move USDT.
Live Check: Moving $1,000 of USDT Between Networks
We requested routes through the LI.FI API on October 30, 2026, for $1,000 of USDT.
| From | To | Routes | Route fees | Start gas | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tron | BNB Chain | 3 | $3.30 | $21.91 | 22 s |
| Tron | Polygon | 4 | $3.30 | $21.91 | 21 s |
| Tron | Base | 1 | $3.00 | $37.03 | 24 s |
| Tron | Solana | 2 | $3.53 | $21.91 | 39 s |
| Ethereum | Tron | 4 | $2.90 | $0.46 | 100 s |
| Ethereum | BNB Chain | 7 | $2.60 | $0.12 | 3 s |

Quotes are live LI.FI routes requested on October 30, 2026, before the 0.7% Step Exchange service fee; they change every minute, and the widget shows the current one before you sign.
What the table shows:
- Leaving Tron is the expensive step. Route fees were similar everywhere ($2.50-3.50), but the Tron start cost about $22-37 in network resources. If you swap from Tron often, staked energy cuts this cost; see gas tokens by chain.
- Arriving on Tron is slower and dearer. BNB Chain to Tron had the highest route fee ($5.75) and took over a minute.
- BNB Chain, Polygon and Base are the cheap hubs. Starting there cost about a cent in gas and settled in seconds.
Step by Step
- Connect your wallet on the network where your USDT is.
- From: USDT on that network. To: the token you want, or USDT on another network.
- Check the receiving address matches the destination network (a Tron address starts with T, an EVM address with 0x, a Solana address is base58).
- Review the quote: route fees, gas and time.
- Confirm in your wallet and wait for the funds to arrive.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing the wrong USDT. USDT on Tron and USDT on BNB Chain are different tokens. If you pick the wrong “from” network, the widget will show zero balance; if you send to the wrong network address, funds may be hard to recover (see sent crypto to the wrong network).
- No gas on the start network. You need TRX on Tron, ETH on Ethereum, BNB on BNB Chain. Without it the swap cannot start.
- Small amounts from Tron. A $22 network cost on a $100 swap is 22%. For small sums, starting from a cheaper network or batching into one larger swap is cheaper.
- Ignoring gas at the destination. If you receive USDT on a new network, you still need its native coin to move it later.
Is This the Cheapest Option?
For a one-off move between networks, an exchange account can be cheaper if its withdrawal fee on your target network is low and you already hold funds there. An on-chain swap wins when you want to stay non-custodial, skip deposits and withdrawals, or receive a different token in the same step. For very large amounts, compare the quote with a few smaller swaps to check price impact.
