Step Exchange (step.exchange) is today an independent, non-custodial cross-chain swap service for 60+ blockchains. From 2022 until at least April 2026 the same domain hosted StepEx (Step DEX), a Uniswap v2-style DEX on Step Network with the SPEX token and a lockdrop that started on August 29, 2022. The current service is not connected to StepEx, Step App or their team.
Key Takeaways
- Then: StepEx, the DEX of the Step App ecosystem on Step Network (an Avalanche subnet), token SPEX.
- Now: a swap and bridge widget for 60+ chains, powered by LI.FI routes, fee 0.7%.
- Not supported: SPEX, the 2022 lockdrop, Step Network, STEP or FITFI rewards.
- Same name, different projects: Step Finance (STEP, Solana) and Step App (FITFI) both closed in 2026.
What StepEx Was
According to the archived step.exchange pages (Wayback Machine, 2022-2026), StepEx called itself “the DEX made by humans for humans” and “the first DEX for mainstream usage”. It was built to plug into Step App, a move-to-earn fitness app, and the Step Protocol SDK.
| Part | StepEx (2022) |
|---|---|
| Blockchain | Step Network, built on the Avalanche subnet codebase |
| AMM | Uniswap v2 fork, model unchanged |
| Bridge | Anyswap / Multichain |
| Token | SPEX (SpEX), circulating supply from a lockdrop |
| Launch | lockdrop from August 29, 2022, 12:00 UTC; SPEX to go live with $1M liquidity |
| Features | swap, farms, staking, analytics, leverage |
The lockdrop asked users to lock liquidity in exchange for SPEX, with “no VCs” in the distribution. The site linked to Step App, staking, a launchpad and Step Network.
What Happened Next
The step.exchange landing page kept the same 2022 text, including the lockdrop countdown, in archived copies from October 2022 to April 2026. Its bridge partner Multichain stopped working in 2023. Step App announced its wind-down in August 2026 and switched off its services on August 21, 2026; FITFI fell about 99.9% from its peak. More: Step App and FITFI shutdown.
After the old project stopped using the domain, step.exchange was relaunched as a new, independent service.
What Step Exchange Is Today
Step Exchange is a cross-chain swap and bridge: you pick a token on one chain and the token you want on another, compare routes and sign in your own wallet.
| StepEx (2022-2026) | Step Exchange (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | single-chain AMM DEX | cross-chain swap and bridge aggregator |
| Chains | Step Network | 60+ (EVM chains, Solana, Bitcoin, Tron and more) |
| Liquidity | own pools | routes through DEXs and bridges via LI.FI |
| Token | SPEX | none, no token |
| Custody | non-custodial | non-custodial |
| Fee | pool fees | 0.7% service fee plus network and route fees |

If You Came Here for Step Tokens
Three different “Step” names lead to this domain in search. Here is where each one is now:
| You searched for | It is | Status | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step DEX, StepEx, SPEX, lockdrop | old DEX on this domain | inactive | this page |
| STEP, Step Finance, step token | Solana portfolio dashboard and token | closed Feb 2026 after a hack | Step Finance shut down |
| FITFI, Step App, Step Network | move-to-earn app and its chain | services off Aug 21, 2026 | Step App shutdown |
| Step wallet | where to hold STEP and FITFI | - | Step wallet guide |
Limits
- Step Exchange cannot recover SPEX, lockdrop deposits, STEP buybacks or FITFI balances; it has no access to those contracts or teams.
- If someone offers a “StepEx migration” or “SPEX claim”, treat it as a scam: there is no such program.
- Step Exchange does not hold funds, so there is no account, deposit or withdrawal to request.
